During her seclusion period, she fell in love with a man who was later killed under the orders of Lord Himuro, who believed him to be deterring Kirie from her duties. Due to Kirie's doubts about her obligations, her ropes from the Strangling Ritual failed to bind the Hell Gate and unleashed the malice.
- Ryozo Munakata (宗方 良蔵, Munakata Ryōzō?)
- Ryozo is a folklorist and the assistant of Seijiro Makabe. He is friends with Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana. He only found Yae, however, crying where the village should have been, and they later married.
- Yae Munakata (宗方 八重, Munakata Yae?)
- Yae was born as Yae Kurosawa (黑澤 八重, Kurosawa Yae?) and was to be part of the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual that took place in their village, but made plans under Itsuki Tachibana's suggestion to escape with her twin sister Sae. However, on the night of the ritual, only Yae escaped. After running away, Yae marries Ryozo Munakata and has a daughter named Mikoto. The family moved to the Himuro Mansion, but after Mikoto disappears, Yae believes that the ghosts had taken her away and commits suicide by hanging herself. Her granddaughter (Miku and Mafuyu's mother) would commit suicide in similar fashion.
Fatal Frame II
Protagonists
- Mio Amakura (天倉 澪, Amakura Mio?)
- Voiced by: Akemi Kanda (Japanese), Kari Wahlgren (English)
- Mio is a 15-year-old girl who becomes caught in the ritual of the Lost Village after following her sister Mayu. She is spiritually less aware than her twin sister, but also less vulnerable to ghosts. Since Mayu injured her leg while they were playing together, she has felt responsible for the accident. In Fatal Frame III, she falls victim to the Manor of Sleep, as she is not over the guilt of having to leave Mayu. (The canon ending is the ending where she is forced to strangle Mayu.)
- Mayu Amakura (天倉 繭, Amakura Mayu?)
- Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese), Kim Mai Guest (English)
- Mayu is the twin sister of Mio and was born first. She has a strong spiritual sense, and this leaves her vulnerable to being influenced or possessed by ghosts. At points while in the lost village, she becomes possessed by Sae. She walks with a permanent limp after a childhood accident, and depends heavily on Mio.
Ghosts
- Sae Kurosawa (黑澤 紗重, Kurosawa Sae?)
- Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese), Kim Mai Guest (English)
- Sae was the younger twin sister of Yae, though she was born first.[1][2] She was less determined to escape from the ritual than her sister Yae, and was content with them being together. They were separated during their escape attempt, in an accident eerily similar to the time Mayu injured her leg. Sae was brought back to the village and hanged in the ritual. Her feelings of having been abandoned by her sister caused the ritual to fail. Her spirit, overcome by the Darkness spread by the failed ritual, and that of the Kusabi's returned from the Hellish Abyss to slaughter the villagers. Sae becomes a secret final boss in the Nightmare Mode (Fatal Mode in Xbox version) playthrough.
- Itsuki Tachibana (立花 樹月, Tachibana Itsuki?)
- Voiced by: Sōichirō Hoshi (Japanese), Sam Paul Salleta (English)
- Itsuki is the older twin brother of Mutsuki, though he was born second.[1][2] He wanted to escape from the ritual, but his brother Mutsuki was too sickly for the attempt, so they performed the ritual hoping their success would spare the Kurosawa twins from the same fate. The ritual, however failed, and Itsuki tried to help the Kurosawa twins escape. He then hanged himself after Sae was recaptured, in hopes of meeting her, Yae, and Mutsuki in the next life.
- Mutsuki Tachibana (立花 睦月, Tachibana Mutsuki?)
- The younger of the Tachibana twins, and Chitose's older brother. He was strangled by his twin in the Crimson Sacrifice ritual, but it failed nonetheless. He is referred to by several diary entries written by Chitose and Itsuki.
- Ryokan Kurosawa (黒澤 良寛, Kurosawa Ryōkan?)
- The ceremony master of the village, and father of Yae and Sae. He was himself a Remaining twin from a ritual, and though he was miserable at his daughters being forced through the same, he was still determined to use them to save the village. He was killed in the Repentance.
- Chitose Tachibana (立花 千歳, Tachibana Chitose?)
- Voiced by: Chizu Yonemoto (Japanese), Kim Mai Guest (English)
- Younger sister of Itsuki and Mutsuki. She was a shy child with poor vision, and often hid when there were strangers in the house. She was deeply attached to her brothers, and while she never knew what happened to Mutsuki, she blamed Yae for running away and getting Itsuki locked up. When the Repentance came, she hid in a closet, hoping Itsuki would find her. There, she witnessed the souls of Sae and the Kusabi killing several of those in her home. Unable to leave the closet, she died shortly thereafter.
- Seijiro Makabe (真壁 清次郎, Makabe Seijirō?)
- A traveling folklorist who visited the village just before its disappearance. He was initially welcomed by the villagers, but this was merely a ruse, as they wanted to use him as a human sacrifice called a Kusabi. He was captured and tortured, and finally thrown alive into the Abyss. He returned during the Repentance, his soul having been take over by the Darkness, and began killing the villagers with Sae. Up until the last chapter of the game, he cannot be defeated using the Camera Obscura.
- Akane Kiryu (桐生 茜, Kiryū Akane?)
- Akane strangled her sister Azami (薊?) for the Crimson Butterfly Ritual, but the ritual left her depressed and guilty. To comfort her, her father made her a doll in Azami's image, and they became inseparable. The doll was possessed by an evil spirit, who brainwashed Akane into killing her father when he realized that the doll was evil, and tried to destroy it. Some time after this, the doll sucked out Akane's soul, and she died.
- Yoshitatsu Kiryu (桐生 善達, Kiryū Yoshitatsu?)
- A doll-maker, and father to Akane and Azami. He made a doll in Azami's image to comfort his remaining daughter Akane. When he learned the doll had become possessed, he tried to destroy it, but he was killed by Akane, who was being controlled by the doll.
- Masumi Makimura (槙村 真澄, Makimura Masumi?)
- A land surveyor sent to investigate the area to be submerged due to the dam construction. He wandered into the village where he was trapped, and was soon joined by his girlfriend Miyako Sudo, who came looking for him. He was killed by the ghost of the Kusabi whilst trying to find a way out of the village.
- Miyako Sudo (須堂 美也子, Sudō Miyako?)
- Girlfriend of Masumi Makimura. Her ghost is the first encountered in the game. After Masumi's disappearance, Miyako went looking for him, only to become trapped in the village with him. She was strangled to death by Masumi's ghost after he had been killed trying to find a way out.

- Kei Amakura (天倉 螢, Amakura Kei?)
- Voiced by: Yusei Oda (Japanese), Josh Keaton (English)
- Kei is a 26-year-old nonfiction writer. He is the uncle of Mio and Mayu Amakura from Fatal Frame II. While researching his niece Mayu's disappearance, he finds a Camera Obscura in a lost village that was unmarked on maps, which frightens Mio. When Mio begins to sleep more and complain of nightmares, Kei realizes that her symptoms are similar to the Manor of Sleep urban legends and starts sending his investigations to Yuu Asou, his friend. However, Kei's strong connection to Mio draws him into the Manor of Sleep as well.
Ghosts
- Reika Kuze (久世 零華, Kuze Reika?)

- Born Reika Yukishiro (雪代 零華, Yukishiro Reika?), Reika was voluntarily adopted by the Kuze family to become the next Tattooed Priestess when an earthquake struck her village and killed her family. Prior to that, she fell in love with Kaname, and despite performing the ritual, she hopes to see him again. When they reunite in the Chamber of Thorns and Kaname is killed by Yashuu Kuze in front of her, Reika's pain causes the tattoos on her body to enter her eyes, causing the Unleashing, which corrupts her spirit.
- Kyouka Kuze (久世 鏡華, Kuze Kyōka?)
- Kyouka was the ceremony matron at the time of the Unleashing. Despite her loyalties to the Kuze family tradition, she is in love with Akito and yearns for him to come back to her, unaware that he was killed by Yashuu. She takes pride in her beautiful, long hair. Kei Amakura's strong resemblance to Akito makes her mistake him for her lost love and she attacks him (see below).
- Akito Kashiwagi (柏木 秋人, Kashiwagi Akito?)
- Akito is a traveling folklorist who was allowed into the Kuze household with the sole purpose of producing heirs with Kyouka. However, he fell in love with her and gave her earrings made out of echo stone. Although he planned on escaping the household with Kyouka, Yashuu killed him before he was able to carry those plans out. - Also referred to as "Kaname Kuze" (乙月 要, Kuze Kaname?) in Rei's notebook, he was the biological son of Kyouka Kuze and Akito Kashiwagi. However, as males were forbidden in the Kuze household, he was to be a victim of infanticide by being thrown down a well. Instead, Kyouka chose to smuggle him into a nearby village and gave him the echo stone earrings Akito had given her, hoping that Akito would find him one day to adopt him. As Kaname grew up, he fell in love with Reika, but left their village before the earthquake struck. He began to dream about Reika and returned to the mansion to see her, but was murdered by Yashuu shortly after their reunion.
- Amane Kuze (久世 雨音, Kuze Amane?)
- Amane was the Handmaiden of the South, one of the Handmaidens who were appointed to attend to the Tattooed Priestess. She was the biological daughter of Kyouka Kuze and an unknown man. When she first saw Kaname, she immediately recognized him as her half-brother by the echo stone earring he wore and helped him reunite with Reika in the Chamber of Thorns. However, as she had violated the traditions, she was punished to die by being staked to the ground by the other handmaidens. Amane is the only non-violent Handmaiden in the game, though the player can battle her in Mission Mode.
- Hisame Kuze (久世 冰雨, Kuze Hisame?)
- Hisame was the Handmaiden of the North, eldest of the Handmaidens who were appointed to attend to the Tattooed Priestess.

- Tengai Narumi (鳴海 天涯, Narumi Tengai?)
- Tengai was the Head Carpenter at the time of the Unleashing. He was in charge of making the physical enclosure for the Kuze Shrine where the tattoo priestess was engraved. He also murdered all the Shrine Carpenters (and killed himself) to create Pillar sacrifices for the hidden shrine that enclosed the "miasma."
- Yoshino Takigawa (瀧川 吉乃, Takigawa Yoshino?)
- Yoshino is the survivor of a plane crash that took the lives of her family and her fiancé, Naoya (直哉?). While hospitalized, she was led into the Manor of Sleep as she dreamed about Naoya, leading to her affliction of the Tattooed Curse. She is the first victim Rei Kurosawa runs into, but she is spirited away when the tattoo takes over her body.
- Kiriko Asanuma (淺沼 切子, Asanuma Kiriko?)
- Kiriko is the survivor of a burglary of which led her parents and brother to be murdered. After hiding in her house and becoming reclusive, she falls victim to the Manor of Sleep and is spirited away. Her fate gives rise to an urban legend about "a woman on all fours."

- ^ a b Folklorist 10 (in game file): Twin Shrine Maidens are sacrificed in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Boys are sometimes used as well. In this case, they are called Altar Twins. The people of this region believe that twins were once a single being, which was split into two at birth. The ceremony is based on the belief that when the two bodies reunited as one, the Shrine Maiden will gain the power of a deity. The text says "the older sister must ** the younger and throw her into the *". The ** part must refer to the most horrible part of the ritual, probably some kind of "sacrifice". Tecmo. - ^ a b Folklorist 12 (in game file): Twins play an important part in the ritual. In recent years, the government issued a decree that the first twin to come out is the eldest. Each region used to have its own rules until that decree was made. When I asked the Ceremony Master about the village's rules, he grinned and said that tradition is tradition. This village still practices the old way. The twin that is born second is considered the elder. Tecmo. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly.
